Swoope Car Accident On VA 262 Leaves Driver Seriously Injured

A 78-year-old man was airlifted to the hospital and another man received minor injuries in a one-car accident on VA 262 on Sunday evening outside of Swoope, Virginia.

According to the Swoope Fire Department, driver Charlie Almond was driving west of Staunton when he lost control of his car on the highway, drove through a guardrail and down a steep embankment. His passenger, 68-year-old Hodgin Locklear, was able to exit the car and call for help after the accident took place. Almond was flown to UVA’s medical center with serious injuries after the crash, though Locklear said that he was conscious and responsive after the accident.

Locklear told authorities that he was napping at the time of the car crash, which took place at around seven in the evening, and did not know why the driver lost control of the car. The accident is currently under investigation.
