Ferrari Recalls 458 Cars After Several Burst Into Flames

For decades, Ferrari sports cars have been known and loved for their quality and their design. However, the new Ferrari Italia model is being recalled from around the world after dozens of sports car owners reported that the back ends of their luxury cars has burst into flames while on the road.

According to the Ferrari car company, "In rare instances the heat shield could become deformed, bringing it too close to the exhaust system and igniting.” The fix for this problem, which has caused cars to burst into flames in California, England, Switzerland, China, and France, is replacing a glue used in the wheelwell with metal fasteners. They are asking all owners who bought the car before this July to bring the car back to their dealer so that the issue can be fixed free of charge. Owners who have already fixed the problem on their own may be reimbursed for the cost of repairs.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is also participating in the Ferrari recall, stating that the defect is a serious one that could lead to car accidents, injuries and fatalities. The NHTSA believes that just over 300 cars in North America are affected by the recall.

The luxury cars have a 4.5-liter 8-cylinder engine, 7-speed automatic transmission, and 570 horsepower. The most basic model of the sports car costs $230,000.
