Virginia Accident Could Have Been Caused By Medical Condition

Posted on May 31, 2010

A fatal Virginia car accident could have been caused by a medical emergency suffered by the driver, Virginia Police say. Their suspicions have been confirmed by the initial results of an autopsy preformed by the County coroner's office on Monday, May 17.

On the morning of Saturday, May 15, 75-year-old Bettie Reed, who was driving with her 83-year-old mother Mamie Turner, crashed her car into a utility pole in Mansfield, Virginia, at the intersection of Park Avenue West and Linden Road. During the Virginia car accident a neighbor of the two women, 45-year-old Darryl Johnson, was seriously injured. Reed was pronounced dead by emergency responders at the scene of the accident while Turner was rushed to MedCentral/Mansfield Hospital in Virginia. Paramedics said that the woman died on her way to the hospital. Johnson was rushed to MedCentral, then airlifted to Grant Medical Center, in serious condition.

Although the autopsy revealed that Reed died of a broken neck sustained during the Virginia car accident, the autopsy also suggested that Reed possibly suffered a medical problem in the moments before the crash – a medical problem that could have caused her to lose control of the car and crash into the utility pole. More specifically, Reed could have suffered a heart attack or stroke while driving, causing her car to leave the roadway and strike an obstacle.

The VA car accident investigation is continuing as police and medical examiners collect more evidence.
